Launch an Online Sticky Note Gallery

As the 2020 Pandemic transforms homes into isolation chambers, community interaction via social media is on the rise. The lonely and/or bored are hunting for easy, creative outlets. Key to avoiding shopping or spending money, is finding supplies that are already laying around the house or right next to the computer. Eureka – Post-its!

Inspiration

Post-it art shows are not a new idea. A Post-It Show is held by Los Angeles-based gallery Giant Robot each December. This exhibition displays thousands of 3 x 3 artworks from 400 emerging and established artists offering scaled down masterpieces for a sweet purchase price of $25 each.

The Online Sticky Note Gallery is an adaptation of this idea, with some tweaking to fit the cultural “norms” of the 2020 Pandemic.

How-to Start an Online Sticky Note Gallery

This guide is based on Facebook posts, because I tend to use it most often.

  1. Create a 1200px x 630px image for your post. Include the following:
    • A call to action. I used, “Show me your Post-it Note Art!”
    • An area for the daily prompt.
    • Brief directions on how to play. I used, “Add it to the comments.”
  2. Customize the image each day with:
    • A new daily prompt (some ideas below)
    • Background color (optional)
  3. Post daily and collect artwork from the comments.
  4. When you have enough for a gallery, create a carousel post with all the art.
  5. Invent a fun virtual opening night (go live?) and launch the gallery!

Daily Prompt Ideas

Here are the art prompts I used:

  1. Create a creature from a coffee stain.
  2. Create visual chaos. Break some art rules.
  3. Create a resist doodle. Play with a Post-it-note and a resist (crayons, wax, rubber cement, masking fluid etc…)
  4. Create a mask out of a Post-it-note.
  5. Create multiples of one. Stack different colored post-it-notes on top of each other and cut out a single shape ✂️ = duplicates of single shape.
  6. Make origami out of a single post-it.
  7. Create a word collage.
